English 621

  • February 5:  More on The Essay and essay analysis.  We also read an essay from Elements of Essays called How to Write a Test and looked at many of the essay elements.
  • February 8:  We  began by extending the reading period and then moved on to a very brief explanation of the use of rhetorical devices in essay writing/analysis.  Using the Students’ Guide to Literature, Language, and Media (page 130), we then divided into groups of two and were given the task of creating ten original pieces of rhetoric.  We’ll continue tomorrow, as well as analyze our first essay.

Canadian History 621

  • February 5:  We discussed more about Canada’s origins with the Brief History of Canada.
  • February 8:  Coffin was called away unexpectedly, so the class traveled to the library to work on weekly discussion responses and also to continue working on the Brief History Of activity (due Tuesday, February 16).

Global Issues 621

  • February 5:  After finding out what was going on in the world this week, we continued with our world tour of maps of the globe.  We shall conclude our world tour early this week.
  • February 8:  Guest speaker, Danny Kelly, a graduate of MRHS in 1988, spoke to the class about international issues with a focus on Haiti.

English 621

  • After silent reading, students participated in a free-write.  This is a good way for Coffin to get a handle on writing styles and whatnot.
  • We also reviewed the Independent Novel Activities and set three due dates:  March 2, April 7, and June 7-9.
  • We concluded with a riveting examination of The Essay.

Global Issues 621

  • We began with a discussion about topics in the news these days.
  • We reviewed the course outline and introduced students to the discussion blog for this course.
  • We then distributed world maps and began our world tour.

Canadian History 621

  • To bring students up to date about the history of our country, we were treated to a Brief History of Canada presentation and a review of some Heritage Minutes.
  • We then viewed a Rick Mercer sketch:  Canada Explained.
